What is it worth?

I was sitting around this evening with nothing better to do and ran across a craiglist ad for a 2002 supercharged Monte power plant with the transmission attached. They claim the car was hit in the rear and the engine only has 16K miles on it. The electricals, harness ECM and all accessories are included.

If everything is true in his ad:

1. Would the engine tranny combo be worth $1,300.00 which is his asking price.

2. Is there a way to go and get information out of the ECM to verify the mileage or hours on the engine?

3. Is the tranny in the MCs as good as the ones in the GPs?

It sound cheap enough to me to buy one of these then build it for a spare 11 second motor. Kind of the pay as you go system.

What do ya think????????????

tranys are the same no mater being in gp or mc

the PCM doesnt store milage or run time for the history of the motor.

the price isnt cheep but its not expensive either.

The BCM is what stores mileage, and in theory, if you are overhauling this engine anyways, it wont matter, as it will be like a brand new engine...

Also, even when you DO swap engines and trannies, it will still have your vehicles mileage.... no matter what you do to the engines...

i think a brand new 3.8L supercharged motor from GMPP is around 6-7 thousand. and doesn't have a tranny attached to it. just to give ya an idea. if that motor was near me i woulda bought it already for my MC :D

RE: What is it worth?

So the tranny is the same on all Montes and Grand Prixs with the 3.8 supercharged engine? I thought I read somewhere that the GP tranny was stronger then the Montes. If that is the case is the Impala the same one also? I think mine has a 2.96 final drive ratio. Correct me if I am wrong.

I thought the price was pretty reasonable. There is another charged engine out of a 2004 Impala going for $1,600.00 with no tranny and it also has less then 20K.

The 2002 Monte Carlos never came with a supercharged engine. 2004 was the first year and 2005 was the last year. I would make sure they aren't pulling your leg, but they simply could have meant 04/05 or it could be from another vehicle.

RE: What is it worth?

Ok this engine has come back on the Craiglist posting. I am going to check it out this weekend. Is there a code on the block I can get to verify what this came out of? The engine is complete with SC, Alternator, trans, harness etc. The picture presents the engine is really clean. I think I can snag it for $1,100.00 maybe less.

I just want to verify what this came out of by either the engine or transmission codes.

Thanks

I am with you I thought I read that the trannys in the GTP/Monte SC were different than the ones in the non SC GP and Montes

RE: What is it worth?

it is... i read that too. however, your transmission is capable of handling it... GM just put a heavier duty transmission in as a safety precaution.... i've never heard of anybody having trouble with the transmission in this body style without the supercharger while fixing it up.
