what engine do i have?

i recently bought a 76 mote carlo, and was told it had a 327ci swapped into it. i was wondering if there is any way i could find out what year or model the engine is. I'm just curious because it could have anywhere from 200-300 hp (so i'm told). any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

the most accurate way to tell is to get the number / letter sequence off of the engine block, then look it up in an engine manuel or online. most times its on the front or rear of the block, i think, stampped right into it, it may be hard to see due to grease on the engine. also, it would not hurt to run the numbers on the cylinder heads, to see if you have more desirable heads. it could be a 350 with 327 " fuelie" heads, which is also a cool combo. you should be able to run the cylinder head #'s with the block #.
good luck, and nice buy :)

I had my 390 out of my Torino once and had a hard time finding the block number. For the cylinder head number, it's usually cast under where the spark plug goes in at on a Ford.... don't know about the Chevrolet. They stamp the casting numbers in different places, but usually in the front of the block (like near where the oil filter goes on, where the cylidner head bolts on)... it's usually not completly hung out in the open though.

Get the casting number off the block. The link shows the location of the casting number on the engine block. http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com/casting.html
