Default transmission troubles

2000 MC SS - 140,000

I have been having problems for about the last 3 months with what seems like the transmission slipping going into 3rd or OD. There is a "surging" of about 500 RPM back and forth when it trys to shift up - most times occuring going uphill. I've tried everything easy, plugs (the back three were a b*tch btw), wires, fuel filter, injector flush ... it seems the transmission is all that's left.

I read a couple other tranny problem threads ... I'm being quoted btwn $1000 - 1500 for a rebuild - is this my only hope?

thanks for the help

Hello, welcome to the forum!!

@ 140K miles, it's time. $1500 is the going rate and sounds fair.

I bought Red straight out of college (traded in an 1986 taurus - college car). 2000 MCSS with with 75K on it ... I'm 6'4" and needed the room, plus I liked the hp and the sharp look.

Purchased in Feb 2003 ... so that's 70K more I've put on in 3 years - I travel quite a bit for work. She's a trouper though ... just shy of 150 and she hasn't had anything major until now. I've heard tranny flushes can cause more harm than good on high mileage vehicles - any opinions on that?

It is suggested that if you do flushes do it every 30K, drop the pan otherwise.

I just got my car back from the shop after having it in for this same problem. Turn out it was a bad solinoid in the trans that was causing the issue. 1075$ and 2 weeks later i have my MC back and she is better then ever. The trans guy put in a B&M Shift kit when he replaced the solinoid and man does the trans feel great. Good luck with your repair.

You probably read some of my fun with my trany, I ended up blowing apart my orbital gears. Total rebuild cost $3500 K CDN.
When it first started my trany was slipping a little as well. The only difference is I only had 85K on the Monte.

So all in all I would spend the money now. If not from the sounds of things you might endup doubling the costs later.

I feel the pain,
Good luck,

$3500 CDN..... That's like $1,000 US ?? LOL [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

I've been nervous about this trans problem our cars seem to have that I have started a savings fund already, but when mine blows, I am getting a ZZP trans... Upgraded to explosion proof of course...

With Todays exchage rate thats at least 1000.95 US and two beaver skins [sm=drooldude.gif]

I agree about the savings fund, even though my trany's just been re-built I think I will start saving for a better upgrade. possibly the zzp as well.

Default Transmission troubleshooting

Hi new to the forum. Ok so just bought this 2006 monte carlo and it has trouble shifting when stopped. When you first take off nothing but if pushed at about 20 mph it grabs hold and shifts perfectly. Od and all. Was thinking it might be a shifting solenoid? But couldn't find out exactly which on is for the low gears? If someone has a diagram or something please let me know. Thanks so much!
