Default Transmission temp sensor issue

About 20k miles ago the coolant temperature sensor went out on my 01 LS, and I replaced it with an aftermarket from AutoZone. It worked fine all year, then started exhibiting it's issues again. Typical stuff, the temperature readout is low or erratic or not reading at all, fans stay on all the time, etc. Just replaced it again over the weekend, and it didn't fix the issue at all. This morning on the way to work the gauge was reading low, then just 'turned off' and dropped to the bottom of the sweep like the power was cut, and it's stayed that way all day.

The only thing I can think is the wiring. I don't even want to THINK about that. :-( The most frustrating part about it is that the next time I'll have to take the car into a shop is two and a half weeks from now because of work and holiday commitments, and my 2nd vehicle being out of commission as well, and I -definitely- won't have time to dig into wiring issues myself. Any other ideas that could be a quick fix I could knock out in a couple minutes like the temp sensor? Couldn't have happened at a worse time... lol
