Transhift Cable

I have a 1985 Monte Carlo SS that is stuck in park and reverse. I replaced the transhift cable but cant get the floor shifter past park and reverse. I have a 200r4 automatic transmission. I replaced cable after the silver threaded cable snapped and I could move the shifter through the gears freely without hitting the brake and getting any resistance or catching any gears. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

This is a little confusing so maybe you can re-word it differently . Being a 1985 I don't believe it has a shift lock on the brake. With the cable disconnected from the shifter does the shifter move freely thru the gears ? With the cable connected to the shifter and disconnected at the trans does it work properly ? I also remember that the steering collum would also rotate where the collum shifter would be when you went thru the gears on a 87 Cutlass we use to have is your the same ?
