Shift knob question...

So i have the same shifter as a million other monte carlo owners with my body style... and i was wondering how many ppl have changed the shift knob/lever in our cars?!?

i want to do somethin like this but black... and keep the leather boot of course still

could that be done? i realise the button would have to be altered or something but i know hurst makes a shiftetr with a button on the end too...

help please!!!

i have changed my shift knob on my 04 monte. it is very simple there is only a clip holding the stock one on, you will not have to break the stock shifter so if you cant figure something you likethen you could just put the stock one back on. any universal shift knob will work as long as it is made for a auto tranny!

how does the new one attach then? or is ther instructions with the new one im guessing...

the new shift knob comes with set screws that screw onto the shaft. then when u push down on the button at the top of the shifter it pushes the safety thing down and lets you shift. but like i said it has to be for a auto tranny because if you cant push the safety switch down then you cant shift but if you lock the switch down all the time the car wont give you your key after you turn the car off lol

fyi.. your going to be changing the knob, not the shifter itself. your still going to have the boot, and the oringinal shaft still on there. Im sure with some thinking you could create something that would look cool. I didnt have the tools to mess with it, heres my shift knob when I sold the car:

I just got a shift knob that went further down on the shifter and I just compacted the boot a little.

ooo i like that... i saw that shifter online and was wondering what it would look like on my car! i like those seats too and i really like the cobra at the bottom! what year is that?

jumpin in here, but you didnt hve to line anything up? just slid it on and screwed it on?

turbo monte 02-05-2010 01:21 PM

yes just slide it over the shaft, they give universal hard ware that works for many cars. on the monte just take off the stock knob and slide the aftermarket knob down to when the top of the shifter starts compressing the safety button, tighten the knob to the shaft and then when the safety button on the knob is pushed it will ollow to shift. im sure you could cut down the shaft and safety button that runs inside the shaft to lower the knob but i didnt see a need to do all that. if there is any more questions feel free to ask!

that was a good question... i never thought of that one. i have been browsing online for new knobs... now i just gotta find one that i like and give it a try. the stock handle comes off really easy! ive taken it off like three times now just sittin in traffic cuz i was bored. i didnt realise how simple it was...
