redid heads, need tourqe specs
SO my 98 z34 3800 series 2 engine blew the heads at 135k from a faulty intake gastket that leaked water in the engine. So i ripped the heads off and bought a new pair. But i need the torque specs of the heads and also a maybe diagram on a few steps how to put it back together or some pictures of a process of doing it... Anything would be of help. Thank you!

To begin with, make sure you have everything you need. Head gaskets (some people say GM OEM head gaskets are the best, and there have been people whine that Felpro head gaskets are garbage), LIM gasket, UIM gasket, and a throttle body gasket if you took that off too. You will need new head bolts, rocker bolts, coolant elbows. I'm sure that there are more little things that you'll need too, maybe new injector o-rings, LIM o-rings. It's just a pain in the ass if you don't have everything you need - when you need it.
Anywho, you need a torque wrench and a torque angle gauge. The head bolts need to be tightened to 37 ft lbs and then turned 120*. The rocker bolts need to be tightened to 11 ft lbs and turned an additional 90*. Other than that, just put everything back together opposite of the way you took it apart. Ensure the correct bolts go in their correct spots. Hopefully you sorted the bolts and don't have them jumbled together - that would be a mess. I'm currently putting my L67 back together and I made sure to keep my bolts for each part seperate. Buy GM Teflon Sealant or something similar for your LIM bolts, and make sure you put RTV on the corners of your LIM gaskets (where the rubber pieces meet the metal gaskets). If you run into any problems along the way, I'll do my best to help. |

What manual is that, that you got those instructions/diagrams from. Is it a computer program. If so could you please tell me which one it is. Im working on a buddies 1997 Monte Carlo 3.1 V6 and am doing a head assembly (well 2 head assemblies) and would be nice to have the program and torque specs.
Thanks all. Everybody here seems nice and cool to eachother. |
It is software called ESI. It is what the dealerships use for shop manuals now.

This thead helps out alot! I had to replace the EGR valve. Thanks!

Am I the only one who at first thought the title said "red heads, need torque specs" ?

Where do you get that manual software from?
And is there anyway you can get a J 36660-A tool without having to buy it? Like is that something rentable? As $1k+ on a special tool defeats the ability to DIY. |
