Default A question of Timing.

I have a question that has been running around my head for a while. is there a way a 3.8 can run without its host PCM?

Let me explain.

Is there a way to fire the plugs with a stand alone system?

Also, since and engine is basically an air pump, i dont see a reason why it couldn't work with carb. Maybe a Holley. Is ther a problem with my logic? I know that it would mean that a new intake wold have to be made.

Or better yet. Can the PCM from say a GTP be stripped down to just work the engine alone? Just use what needed ( sensors and stuff ). I dont want it to control the Trans. I have separate plans for that.

I have my reasons for asking this and i have till April to find out answers.

Been doing some reading and found something called a MEGASQUIRT 2. Does anyone have any knowledge of this system?

I just looked at ZZP and they seem to have just what i need. A PCM with everything removed except what is absolutely needed. VERY KEWL!!

Yes, there are lots of standalone systems out there; but they're pretty expensive. Why would you want to get rid of a perfectly good system to have something else run it?

Also, since and engine is basically an air pump, i dont see a reason why it couldn't work with carb. Maybe a Holley. Is ther a problem with my logic? I know that it would mean that a new intake wold have to be made.
You could, but thats going to be a massive pain for no reason. Since the stock L36 manifolds weren't made to have fuel in them; you can't just modify them for a carb mount- especially on top- or you'll likely end up with terrible flow and fuel puddling. You could have a custom intake built- but I really don't see the point in doing it- you'd be getting rid of a perfectly good fuel injection system- I don't really see you gaining much power, even with a good custom intake.

If you really want a carb'd 3.8; why not get one of the old 80's ones?

Can the PCM from say a GTP be stripped down to just work the engine alone? Just use what needed ( sensors and stuff ). I dont want it to control the Trans.
Yes, a lot of the manual trans swap fieros and such use it. Theres even a guy with a gtp who did a manual swap with a turbo. You just have to do a little work to the pcm.

It will work, but I still don't see what is wrong with the OEM setup. Just make yourself a custom harness (remove the wires you don't need and reroute the stuff for whatever vehicle you're putting it in)- then do a custom tune on the pcm.

If you want to use a supercharged 3800, you're definitely not going to be able to use a carb with it. It is doable with a regular 3800 with enough fab work, but the supercharger goofs that all up.
