Pic's of my failed turbo

Thought I would post a couple of photo's of my turbo that ate some exhaust manifold debris. The new Borg-Warner 8473 is now being mocked up for the install with the new Cartuning exhaust manifolds.

Pretty extensive damage to the turbine blades from some very minute debris that detached itself from the ZZP Plogs. LOL, so if anyone needs a good size turbo to rebuild cheap let me know... :) :)

Ha Ha Dave, it was a suprise for sure. Put the pedal to the metal and at about 100 a big puff of white smoke came out of my exhaust and poof sound. Pulled over, all seemd okay except for a now persistent whine. Drove it 75 more miles to the shop and this is what happened. :)

That is messed up for sure, does it only need the turbine or is the housing damaged too?

Enzo354 04-24-2013 09:32 PM

Ouch! I'll never run without a post turbo screen because of turbos just coming apart like that.

The housing is actually still in great condition. The whole shaft now wobbles like a wino on a friday night. Precision does not make this turbo any more, we could have used Garrett parts to rebuild it. But I decided to move on past this Precision and we now have a more optimized turbo to install. :)

A pre-exhaust screen? Seems like a fail safe that would have worked here. Just my luck there was not one..,. :(

A screen in the intake tubing mainly, after the intercooler even, just to save the motor. His turbo blew on the cold side.

So your saying a screen just after the intercooler to prevent any foreign objects from being ingested into the motor? If I lost my motor that would probably be the end of my car. It's been such a money pit as it is. I will tell my mechanic about this, sounds like a solid idea. Lucky the debris went out the exhaust side and not the intake. We never found the part as it was pulverized from the blades. No damage to the Cat either.
