Need Help!

I have a 2001 Monte SS with 70,000 miles and yesterday out of the blue 1st gear acts almost like the tranny is slipping (though I do not think this is the problem) and then when it shifts to 2nd the car loses even more power and when warm herks and jerks a little? Once the car hits 3rd it seems OK unless I try and accelerate and drop it back down into 2nd? No check engine light though my gas mileage has gotten worse over the last month or so? Any ideas, I have read here that there is a silinoid (spelling?) that commonly goes bad? By no means am I a mechanic but my brother in law is and will be looking at it tomm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for Joining the Forum and the MCF Family!

Heres where I would start to do to remedy the issue with your transmission...(sorry your having trouble) I would consider doing/having a fluid and filter change fiorst and foremost. and see if that doesn't fix it... I'm curious... with that low of mileage..... Is it low on trans fluid? ,,,, also what color is the fluid? Is it bright red?

Thanks for responding Stump it does not appear to be low on Fluid, I have never had it changed so I do know that needs to be first. As far as the color when I checked it it was Pink but had a slightly burnt smell. The only other issue I have had with the car is a couple of times I have started it and it rattles aost like a cylinder misfiring but that has only happened once or twice? At cruising speeds it acts fine?

FYI for anyone reading this... if you are having shifting issues do not change the fluid. any reputable repair shop wont change fluid if you are having shift problems and for good reason. it will only make things worse.
