idle very high

please give me some ideas i think a faulty sensor may be to blame, coming home my car all of a sudden had very high idle at 1500 rpms when i was completely stopped i would let it run without stepping on the gas and rpms would drop to about 1000 runnin normalas soon as i touched the brake pedal the rpms would shot back up weird had to stop and pump gas put the car in park and rpms shot up to 3000 i shut the car off and of course engineshut off roughly got bakin the car and started up and i was bak to normal

RE: idle very high

It is most likely the IAC valve (Idle Air Control Valve) as it will not necessarily throw a code but could be causing that issue. I had the same intermittent problem on mine and I replaced that sensor for approx 30.00 and it appears to have fixed the issue. Just suggestion of course as i am NOT a mechanic however do all work on my cars and have scanners etc :)

high/intermittent idle

Hi y'all, did anyone ever figure this out? My 3400 started this high idle crap over a year ago. Check engine light never came on. My initial thought was the throttle, but that has a pretty strong spring pullin it back, so it was not stickin or anything. Then it just went back to the normal 650 RPMs on its own. But it came back in the winter, so I took some advice on here, pulled the IAC & shot some lube down where the lil plunger comes out. I checked the throttle body for gunk buildup, it was fairly clean. That seemed to work for awhile, until it came back recently.

It varies. Sometimes it'll be around 1,000 RPMs, then maybe 1,400 if driving on side streets. When I exit the freeway, it might jump to 3,000. That's when I'm forced to put in neutral & shut the car off. When I start it back up, it returns to the normal 650. But as soon as I start driving, it jumps higher. This time I tried lithium grease on the IAC plunger, but that did nothing. Then someone posted to unplug the TPS, & if it goes down, then that's the culprit. Didn't go down. I also checked for vacuum leaks, but didn't find any. The only other test I did was to gun it for a few seconds while cruisin on an open street, then let off the gas totally, which usually dropped the RPMs down to normal. But as soon as I gave it some gas to go, it jumped up again.

So I was at the junkyard & plucked a TPS, IAC & intake air temp sensor. Tried the TPS out first, but no fix. Then the IAT - nope. Then the IAC - still high idle. I also snagged a good-lookin vac hose that connects to the PCV valve (I think?). Nothing made a difference. Back to the drawing board. But as I still have to drive this bratty car to work & stuff, it has now reverted back to normal, for the most part. So WTF is causin my Monte to wig out? The only other observation I can point out is that if it's semi-behavin, it will sit at 650 RPMs, then jump up to 1,000, then back down, then up again later, while the car is stopped at a light. So it seems like somethin is tellin it to do that?

You're better off creating a new thread for your issue.

The OP hasn't been online in a decade and the person who bumped this last has been off for nearly 4 years.

yes... it was the computer. It cost me lots of money trying to fix it myself. lol
