Fan only blowing from feet and defroster?

Hey guys, I got a problem that has been ticking me off for a while now. No matter which directional setting for the fan to blow (defrost, floor only, vents, ac, max ac, etc.), It just always blows from both the windshield defroster, and the floor.
The temperature knob seems to be working fine, and the speed of the fan as well. I think the only reason the AC isn't working is because It wont change directional flow.

Any Ideas?

the diverter that controls the direction the air flows is controlled by engine vac. there should be a thin plastic line that runs from the engine to the fender and then into the interior. in the fender you will find a ball or container that helps to hold engine vac so that you still have vac if you floor the car or for just shortly after you shut off your car.

Most likely the cause is the line is either cracked or the ball is cracked. my money is on the line being cracked. another possibility is that you have a major vac leak on the engine. but that would cause drivability issues.

Well, the engine vac leak could be a possibility. My car has been running like crap recently. At stop lights, i will try to accelerate at a normal speed and it "bogs" down. I have to let off the gas and try again when this happens. I changed both o2 sensors, plugs, and wires. I don't really know how to find the vac leak, but I'll figure it out. Thanks!

What car?

The vacuum he is talking about is different. But your bogging problem sounds like a bad catalytic converter.

This is a flap that is controlled by a vacuum, when you turn your dial, the doors move to direct air flow, yours aren't moving and defaults to open and to blow the way you describe.

if he has a bad intake leak, there wouldnt be much engine vac so the vents wont work either.

Check all the hoses under the hood. the best way to find a vac leak is to buy a can of starting fluid and spray it around all the vac lines. !!! be careful not to spray the exhaust manifold while hot and running as starting fluid is FLAMMABLE!!! go figure? lol

but you will know you found the leak when the idle changes in response to you spraying that location. what is happening is your adding fuel and the mix/ AF ratio changes the the rpms change are a result.

Well, I checked for any leaks with the carb cleaner and no changes in idle speed or anything like that. On to the next step :\ .... By the way its a 97 3.1L LS

I bet its the white vacuum line, my 84 has the exact same problem, just followed the white hose on the left side of the car, mine crumbled apart when i touched it, get a new hose and it should be good..
