Engine replacement
 

Hey, I’ve got a important question I’m hoping one of you have the answer too or possibly might know how I can get an answer. My 2000 Monte Carlo pace car (pace car portion isn’t very relevant considering it’s just an appearance package) currently has a bottom end knock. I plan to swap it with another series 2 engine, but I was curious if anyone knew the differences between the years and the models that the 3800 series 2 comes in. (Bonneville,grand prix, etc) I’ve found a good deal on a running 1999 series 2 out of a bonneville but I was curious if anyone knew if the transmission will hookup correctly to my 2000 Monte Carlo and if there’s any sensor connections that may be different. I don’t want to swap it in and have it not work and waste all of my time. Thank you! I would be using the transmission that is already in my Monte Carlo. Just strictly an engine replacement/swap.

First point of clarification - is it a L36 or L67? The Bonneville had options for both.

If it is an L36 like yours, then the engine itself is the same and will connect without issue.

Don't throw away your current engine though. Although the engine itself is the same, the components bolted to it are not (mostly because its an H body instead of a W body). Youll likely need to scavenge parts off your old engine to get it to work. A few things I can think of off the top of my head:
-Lower engine mount, the H body style is a bit different
-Upper engine mounts - the H body doesn't use dog bones like the W cars do. Youll need to move your dog bones over as well aa the bits they mount to (the whole H body ICM bracket is different)
-I believe the oil filter adapter is different, although that may be model specific.


None are a big deal to fix as long as you keep your old engine 100% intact.
