Engine removal

I apologize if this has been asked before. I did a search, but did not find what I was looking for.

I am looking at purchasing another 6th gen Monte. It needs to have the 3800 switched out. Is it easier to remove the engine from the bottom, or the top? I am thinking that the bottom might be easier, given the fact that I am currently not in possession of a hoist of anything. I can get one, but I would rather take it out of the bottom if it is possible. Are there any write-ups for removing the engine?

Be easier thru the top. Period.

If just pulling engine I go out the top because if going out the bottom the sub frame and trans needs dropped as well. Now just swapping a trans i go out the bottom every time. If pulling both engine and trans i go out the top as well.

That's what I thought. I went and looked at the car earlier. It knocks a couple times when first started, but then it runs really quiet. The guy selling it says that the engine needs replaced. It comes with a replacement engine. I'm just not sure if it needs replaced or not. I have certainly heard engines knock worse than this one. It's a 2001 Special Addition SS. It has the Hi Sport effects and everything. I would most likely take the Hi Sport effects off and sell them. I am not a big fan of them.

The high sport will sell fast on here. It's hard to say if it needs replaced or not with not being there. All in all its a simple job to swap engines just takes patience and time and room to work on it.

I'm thinking the car would be worth it, even if it needs the engine replaced. It has no rust, and very few dents or anything. It does need repainted. The finish on the paint is not the best. The front and rear bumper covers are chipping pretty badly. It is missing the rear hi sport on the back bumper cover. It has brand new tires and 17" rims. It comes with a replacement engine with 100K miles on it. It has had all the solenoids replaced in the transmission also. He is asking $1800 for it, but I think that if I try and buy it, I might try to talk him down some, being that it needs repainted.
