Custom tuning

So a friend of mine had his Yukon tuned by a professional from gm, and the guy charges 425 for a custom tune

He says I will get like 35 extra horse power

I am thinking about doing it soon

I am running 15.9 and curious after a tune how many tenths like 35 horsepower will take off my time?

I know the mpg increase will pay the tuner off in the long run

This is tough trying to do finishing touches on my car for shows but going for some performance mods in between, choices choices!

35 seems high to get from v6 with a tune...

I got mine tuned about 3 weeks ago,

I only gained about 3 horse power but tons of torque and much better air/fuel ratio.

worth payin for but not think you get that much power, it might feel like it but, i cut a couple tenths of my 0 to 60.

Good luck. Let us know the results.

Any one know of a good dyno tune shop in Northwest Indiana?

Ask him if he will back that statement up with a garauntee of dyno results. Thats ~28 whp gain, and that is crazy high for just a tune.

To give you an example- the 3800 NA engines dyno approx 160whp stock. The record holder for highest stock cam dyno is 187 whp (a 27 whp gain with many mods, except a cam swap), and even a handful of the record holders with a cam swap and other mods were barely able to achieve a ~30 whp gain.

I realize the 3800 vs the 3900 is apples to oranges, but they're both NA, 2 valve pushrod engines- so the comparison is relatively valid. I just can't see a simple tune on a 3900 being more effective than all kinds of bolt ons (and a cam in some cases) combined on a 3800.

Doesn't a 15.9 seem extremely high for 250 crank hp in a wbody? The 240 hp grand prixs run mids-high 14s stock with 10 less horsepower- thats more on par with the 200 hp NA grand prix 3800s. Just seems like something is really wrong there.

Its hard to say what difference a tune will make in your times, because your time seems off the chart slow- so I'm thinking something is wrong.

There is a good one out in Highland/Schereville, but I can't seem to remember the place's name for the life of me. The guy did my buddy's LS2 on the street with final tuning on the dyno up at MROZ in Hobart. It was off of Indianapolis down towards rt 30 more, on the east side of the road- I'll have to ask my buddy next time I see him if he remembers the name.

You also have to think about the TQ numbers on the 3.9 compared to the L67. But yeah it does seem a little high.

It is like 40 lb ft less than an L67 I suppose, but still- I was running less than a second slower with the old 3100 in my monte, and he has almost another 100 horsepower on top of that. Is the elevation in AZ that high?

Awesome, thank you very much! I look forward to getting the info. Maybe they'd be in the yellow pages?

I agree and think my car is slower than should be, I know the bigger wheels are hurting me but it shouldn't hurt me too much, maybe it is, I am gonna have to do some actual testing like drag racing with stock wheels and seeing what my time is, after a tune on my pcm sometime will test after that, I agree my car shouldn't be so slow but it is, when I first ran my car I was very dissapointed in my time,

We will see if I can get some performance out of this

mavrickf1613 05-14-2009 07:44 PM

This guy who said his pcm whith the yukon was professionally tuned said he went from a 17.6 to a 15.6

I have seen him do 15.6 runs but that much of a difference on his v8 being tuned.

I never seen his original time before tuned
