Crank bearing on 2003 Monte Carlo SS
Ok so after multiple trips to my mechanic about a clicking noise in my engine everytime I accelerate he came to the conclusion its my...crank bearing???...At first he said it was a lifter but after replacing them all and still hearing the nasty noise he said it has to be the crank bearing (he didn't charge for the lifters).... he then says I will have to go and drop a whole new engine in my car to fix it....Sounds sketchy like hes trying to get a dollar out of me but I kind of trust him...I was wanting to know if you guys have ever encountered a similar problem??...and what you did?? Thanks !!!!

I would definitely get a second opinion with replacing something that big just for a noise.

pull the dipstick and look closely with bright light...look for sparkley little specs/pieces of metal....that would be the 1st sign of a crank or rod bearing going out.... if you had a crank bearing going out the car would likely feel low on power also.

my guess is a cracked rear manifold...forgot to put that in my last post lol

clicking noise in my engine I'd check for small exhaust leaks- these often make clicking noises. Collapses/stuck lifters make clicking noises as well, but you already rules this out. Check your belt pulleys and tensioners too- they make weird noises alot. What year/engine Monte Carlo is this anyway? |
now for a bad crank bearings you may need a new motor or a bunch of money spent at the machine shop to get the bores in the crank journal boared slightly over and put in oversize bearings, get the crank polished check the rods and do the same but yes go get a second opinion o and drive as little as posible
|
If it truly is a bad crank bearing, there is no reason to go through all that machine shop work with a 3800- they're a dime a dozen at junkyards- just get a used, decent mileage bottom end, and swap bottom halves.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.. Im pretty positive its a bearing because my car has started to perform worse and worse...and the sound gets progressively louder as the engine heats up so I know its nothing thats just cosmetic its definitely effecting my baby's performance...I think Im just going to go with what guy above me said and get a used one...I did get a second opinion and it was all the same...so Im glad my mechanic isn't trying to rip me off
