97 Gtp trans swap into a 00 Monte Carlo

Anybody know if it will work or could I swap the trans harness inside to make it work an get my gear ratio upgraded to

nitehawkjcb 06-17-2014 07:33 PM

You don't need to change the harness, the transmission should bolt right up, you MIGHT need an L67 flexplate. But you would have to change the gear ratio in the tune of your PCM though.

Watch out with the 97 models. If I recall correctly, there were differences between it and the 98+ transmissions. I do know that the 98+ PCMs are different and run a common OS across all the V6 platforms. The 98+ PCMs are also more tunable, but I'm not sure how they would react with a 97 trans. The 97 GTP was a different animal that had some weird differences compared to the 98-03 GTPs.

The '97 Grand Prix had like ODB-1.5 and NO ONE to my knowledge makes a tuner for it. I have heard that people have re-wired and installed a '98+ PCM into a '97, so seeing that, I bet a '97 trans can be tuned in a 98+ car.

I believe the '97 trans on the Grand Prix is also vacuum assisted (has a vac line that connects to the throttle body).

There may be a few other differences and "gotchas" in the process.

powrtuner will work on some 96's and 97's. though the support is very limited. ive seen the bin files for 96's and 97's.

JoeD 06-18-2014 12:15 PM

So I will be taking a chance with the 97 trans an another question if I install it would I be able to test it right away to make sure it works but I don't have gear ratio change yet or how does that work?

vikesfan 06-18-2014 02:23 PM

im wondering, why are you trying to put a 97 gtp trans into a 00 monte?

do you have the LS or the SS???

unless you have already have the trans, dont even bother with it. find one on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

JoeD 06-18-2014 03:10 PM

Iam supercharged an my trans is done an the 97 I got for free

SupplySgt 06-19-2014 02:53 AM

Jason I'd right. One of the key differences between the 97 and 98+ GTP transmissions is the 97 still runs vacuum. You will have to have a 97 year GTP throttle body in order to use it as far as I know unless you want to mod either the trans.

JoeD 06-19-2014 06:44 AM

So if it doesn't have the vaccum then I should be good to use it?

vikesfan 06-19-2014 09:09 AM

i wouldnt put the 97 trans in, just my opinion.

the n/a 3800 trans, imho, have the better gear ratio 3.29. and you can always swap out the diff to make it an "hd" transmission just like the gtp trans. thats really the only difference between them.

used gtp 4t65hd trans or the regular 4t65 run 200-500 on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market (depending on your location).

The_Maniac 06-19-2014 03:54 PM

I honestly don't know enough of the trans differences between years. Vikesfan sons like he's got a lot of experience in this market.

Btw - as for the vac line on the throttle body, you just have to finish drilling a hole gm already started and add a fitting.

JoeD 06-20-2014 12:24 PM

Check the trans it doesn't have the vaccum line but now idk I'm stuck I need a new trans asap an I have this one here i got for free any thought as what I should do remember it's a 97 gtp trans going into a 00 Monte Carlo Zzp said they can make it work what do I do??

vikesfan 06-23-2014 09:11 AM

get the correct transmission for your car.

if you want the HD trans, get a 1998+. you will need to have it tuned for this as well.

JoeD 06-23-2014 12:15 PM

I went the path of the trans for my car an I'll save an get one from Zzp

vikesfan 06-23-2014 01:20 PM

good choice.

are you looking for a performance build or something? if so, there are a few options for those, not just zzp.

if your not adding a bunch of power, a stock replacement should be just fine.

JoeD 06-23-2014 06:46 PM

I have a built L67 an I just need a new trans right now for to get back on the road but do plan on building a trans

l67ss 06-24-2014 03:01 AM

Only l36 97 gps had the 4t60. Gtps had 4t65s that will work with the later years. Two things of note, youll need 97-98 trans lines, and you may have to rewire for an external nss. 97-03 gp, 96-99 monte lumina, regal, intrigue all had external nss, 00-05 monte/impala had internal nss
