95 3.1 to a 97 with 3.4

Hello, is it possible to put a 3.1 out of a 95 chevy lumina into a 97 z34 Monte Carlo that has the 3.4. Would I have to change alot? I have a 95 lumina parts car with a good 3.1 and I found a 97 Monte Carlo Z34 with a bad 3.4 for $500. It has a good body and transmission and leather interier.

should work

I dont think it would work actually. You would need to find a computer that would run a 3100 and a 4t65e transmission. The problem is that the 4t65e transmission behind the 97 3.4 dohc I believe has a different gear ratio than any other 4t65e. You wont be able to find a 3100 ECM with the programming for the 4t65e out of a 97 Z34. Also, the 97 z34 was OBDII and the previous montes werent, so you may run into problems in that department. If you could find a 3.4 DOHC engine out of a 96-97 Z34 you could drop it right in. It would make a hell of a lot more fun car also.

3.1 = boring. trust me, lol. if it were me i would be looking to barter the lumina for a decent 3.4 or, even better, a 3.8.... although IDK if the 3.8 is a bolt in swap eather.... but better than a 3.1! good luck getting everything sorted out :)

Of course it is- you'd just swap the engine, trans, wiring, pcm, everything over to the 97- however, you may have to do a little rewiring of the interior harness's obd2 port since the 95 isn't tecnically obd2.

If you're just trying to make one functional car, and don't really care about performance or anything- it should be totally doable. However, if you live in an area with emission testing, you're probably not going to be able to pull it off. Around here, if you have a 95 or older they put the car on the rollers and do a tailpipe test- if you have a 96 or newer, they plug into the obd port only. So being a 97, they'll go to plug it in and it won't be able to pass the test. If you have no emissions where you live, then no worries there.

The 3800 would require the much sought after 5th gen 3800 engine wiring harness to get it to work in the car. Good luck finding that. They are usually snapped up by the 5th gen L67 swappers. Even if you found one, you still have the same problem with the trans that you would have with the 3100.

Even if the only reason for not swapping the 3100 was it was boring, then IMO the 3800 isnt much better unless it were an L67. 3800= cheap economical and torquey. The 3.4 just screams power tho. It still has enough torque to burn the tires (trust me I know from experience) but then it really wakes up and becomes a whole different animal after 3 grand. If you can keep up with maintenance then its a better choice IMO. I dont know maybe you just have to drive one every day to understand it.

It would work but I don't really know why you'd want to do that. You are really downgrading the car. I'd try to do the 3.8 route myself. Look around in junkyards at Riviera's, Monte Carlo's, Impalas, Grand Prix GT's... find a good car and take the engine, transmission, frame mounts, wiring, intake boxes, fuel lines, and everything else! but the body!

The only reason I was thinking about doing it was I would only have $500 in a nice car.

True ... But for all the hassle of converting everything over only to end up with a smaller engine that puts out less HP? It definitely isn't worth it.

Sell the 3100SFI and 4t60e tranny, part out the rest of the Lumina, and use the money you get to buy another 3.4DOHC engine. Just drop it in the Monte and call it a day. Less hassle and more bang for the buck in the end.

I was only going to do the swap if that was all there was to it. Just to have a cheap car. I just totaled out my 2002 SS Monte Carlo.http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...001_medium.jpg
