1999 monte carlo ls
 

I have a 1999 Monte Carlo LS with a 3.1 v-6. Im trying to do some upgrading, but i cant find anything to do that is mildly cheap...under $300. I want something that i can feel the difference with, so if anyone has ideas plz tell me. If its from a website leave the site too. thanks

You should be able to start with breathing; both inhale and exhale, for a relatively inexpensive upgrade. You can go to your local autoparts store and pick up a drop in replacement air filter (K&N for example) for about $40. It made a noticeable difference on my '05 3.8. Later on, you can consider a Cold Air Intake.

Replacing the exhaust is also a fairly inexpensive mod depending on how elaborate you go. You can just replace the muffler with something higher flowing, or do a complete new system. My experienced has been that if you can find a local non-franchise muffler shop, they can build a complete system for you for sometimes less than what a pre-fabbed kit would cost from a top manufacturer.

i have two recomendations for you.
1st: skip that dro it filter. buy a cone filter for $25 from autozone, a section of ABS or PVC pipe from HomeDepot for about $10 and go to the junk yard and get a second flex elbow prob not more the $5. that is the extent of parts you need to do a FWI. i have the complete writeup here on my website. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/473859/6

2nd: Next while your at the Junkyard look for a car with a 3400 engine. the upper intake will look like yours. and will bolt on. it has a bigger TB and slightly larger intake runners. price anywhere between 30-50 at my local JY. but price will vary

also i agree about working on the exhaust. swap out the muffler for a high flow and eliminate th first cat converter with a straight pipe. this will help power and increase sound. i wouldnt recomend flowmaster mufflers many people chose those and later swap out to something else. i would say magnaflow or borla.

ive been a member of a few other forums for about 4 years now and a lot of people start off with flowmaster. be it 40's Delta 40's and the majority of them endup going with magnaflow or borla. the flowmasters do sound good. but from the feedback im hearing they dont perform as well as the others! i was shocked when i heard that but, after hearing it so many times... im just going to go straight for the magnaflows. i have a friend who has a mustang and he said the same thing. from the people he has talked to the magnaflows are the way to go

i have an exhaust plan in the works... my cutout is going bye bye.
its going to consist of:
-2.5" DP (rare for 3.4L DOHC's) compared to the factory's 2" interior dia on their so called 2 1/4"
-Dyntech High flow cat ( quotes 54% increase in flow over stock)
- 1 or 2 magnaflow mufflers (depending on sound level)
-exiting on the passanger side.
-deleting stock system for a pretty nice weight savings!

Hmm. I'll have to go and check those out. I am concerned about sound. I don't want the cans to make my exhaust sound loud and ricey, that's why I like the folws.
