4th gear tends to be on the weak side so its best to not go into it at full throttle.

Leaving it in 3rd prevents the car from going into 4th gear. It'll shift through all the gears and stop at 3rd.

Leprechaun is correct. Stay out of 4th under WOT!

Didn't they improve (harden) the shaft on the 4th gear clutch hub in midyear '03 and later models?
Are there other problems with 4th gear?

I believe the problem is as Turbo Monte said on a different post is the 4th gear clutch packs won't stand all the pressure / friction and they are the components which fail, not the shaft breaking.

When racing I start in 1st and shift up to 2nd and finally 3rd.

Zippy is correct. It's the 4th clutch packs that will be toast very fast when making decent power and in 4th gear
