if you're on a quarter mile, the car might want to go into overdrive... in an 1/8th it doesn't matter. alot of people say that on some cars the transmission pressure points are higher in D than in OD so it is better... it may or may not matter, but just for kicks and giggles i'd do it anyway.

Great writeup and tips there Duane! You obviously put alot of thought and experience into this, and there are many who could benefit from reading it. You did omit one very important point though - make sure you have your windows up. I've seen many a yahoo go down the track with their windows down, and shudder to myself.
Cheers!

can't say i've seen somebody go with windows down.... but a good tip regardless.
of course, wind coming in your car pushes against your back window and slows you down... you will always do better with your windwos up
thanks vega.

Relly good write up, These are all the tips I got from a friend after he raced once, you learn with practice and you get better with racing more, I got 15 drag races under my belt and have made it to the high fifteens, I really got good at getting some white smoke from my z rated tires in my burnouts, I cant wait till it cools down here, we have to have the windows rolled up its a safety thing, once you improve your reaction times you will get a better quarter mile time.
I race with a quarter to half tank no spare tire 91 gas and octane booster, and we have a inspection before racing on our cars to make sure they are safe.
Remember no Insurance on the track, Race at own risk
It's only 20 dollars for all night fun here on a NHRA track, Definately Race at the track not the street

well.. faster reaction just means you get to teh end quicker.. it does NOT mean a faster ET... ET is just how long it takesfrom when youroll off the starting line and cross the finish line.

so mid 20's for air pressure how can i control the release let alone refill my tires. so in a automatic put it in third and stay in it all way? and normally how long after finish line u have to slow down?
also the track near my house stats i nmeed a "helmet" howmuch will that cost?

you will have about a half mile or so plus a gravel pit to slow down. those guys going 200 mph dont have problems with that so you shouldnt

when you take your valve stem cover off there is a small piece inside that can be pushed with something such as a key. take a tire pressure gauge to the track with you and slowly drain the air down to the mid 20s. lots of tracks have an air tank to refill with.
