2014 Chevrolet SS
By Laura Burstein
On Sale: Fall 2013
Expected Pricing: $44,470 < I like it for a 4 door, but I don't like the Price $$$$$

Fans of rear-wheel-drive compact sportscars will no doubt salivate over the all-new Chevrolet SS performance sedan, unveiled at the Daytona International Speedway as the pace car for the NASCAR season opener.

The four-door powerhouse is significant, because, as GM North America President Mark Reuss (and founder of Chevrolet's performance division) points out, it's been 17 years since the brand has built anything like it, despite the fact that sporty rear-wheel-drive vehicles were key in shaping Chevrolet's brand identity in earlier years.

Under the hood is Chevrolet's 6.2-liter V8 engine, the same one used in the outgoing Corvette. In the Chevrolet SS, it's expected to crank out 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Estimates put the 0-60 mph time at about five seconds. Purists will bemoan the lack of a manual transmission . A 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters will be the only option.

An aluminum hood, rear deck lid and engine block help to keep the car light. A MacPherson suspension up front and a multi-link setup in back aim to keep the Chevrolet SS firmly planted. Chevrolet claims a near 50/50 weight distribution , a claim all-too-often reserved for luxury sportscars like BMW. The Chevrolet SS will ride on 19-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone summer tires and big Brembo brakes. \

The Chevrolet SS will be built in Australia on GM's global Zeta platform, and is largely based on the Holden Commodore, which is built in the same assembly plant for the Australian market.

Size-wise, the Chevrolet SS is 195.5 inches long and 74.7 inches wide, slightly larger than the Malibu, and shorter (but wider) than current-generation Impala, the latter of which was the last model to feature a variant with an SS badge.

Front legroom in the new SS sedan is about on par with these models at 42 inches, while the SS slightly bests both the Malibu and the Impala in rear legroom at an ample 39 inches.
Standard features will include leather upholstery with an eight-way power driver's seat, air conditioning, color display screen, color head-up display, 9-speaker Bose audio system, rearview camera and GM's MyLink infotainment system. Several electronic safety features also come standard, including lane departure warning, blind spot detection, forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert and an automatic parking assist system.

The 2014 Chevrolet SS goes on sale fourth quarter of 2013, according to Chevrolet. The 2014 Chevrolet SS will retail for $44,470, including $995 destination, Chevrolet said, and the only options will be a power sunroof ($900) and a full-size spare tire ($500).

Clearly not being made for the consumer, just being made so it can be used in nascar. Something like that should probably be in the mid 30k's I don't see much that warrants a 45k dollar price tag.

2014 Chevrolet SS

The SS is Chevrolet's long-awaited rear-wheel drive performance sedan. Built in Elizabeth, Australia, by General Motors' Holden division, it is essentially an Australia-only VF Commodore sporting a Bowtie emblem on the grille.

The SS rides on a modified version of the Zeta platform that also underpins the two-door Camaro. It stretches 195.6 inches long, 74.8 inches wide and 58.7 inches tall, making it roughly the same size as Cadillac's range-topping XTS.
To briskly move the SS' considerable mass, engineers dug around the Corvette parts bin and pulled out a LS3 6.2-liter V8 that makes 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. of torque. It sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

A 3.27 final gear ratio helps the SS sprint from zero to 60 mph in a scant five seconds. Ventilated disc brakes manufactured by Brembo help ensure that the sedan stops as well as it goes.

Equipped with electric power steering, the SS is first and foremost a driver's car. It has a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and the hood and trunk lid are both made out of aluminum in order to lower the center of gravity.

Looking the part
The SS wears an aggressive look thanks to high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, LED daytime running lights and staggered 19-inch alloy wheels. A bulging hood, sculpted body panels and a full body kit add a muscular touch and make the SS look fast even when it's not moving.
Out back, the SS is fitted with discreet trunk-mounted spoiler, black plastic trim on the bottom of the bumper and two chromed exhaust tips.
Life aboard
With ample room for up to five passengers, the SS' interior is better equipped than its performance-oriented drivetrain might suggest. Make no mistake: This is not a lightweight, no-frills race car.
Cleanly designed, the dashboard is finished with soft-touch materials, and two bucket seats with the SS logo stitched into the seat back come standard up front. Ice blue ambient lighting and two types of chrome trim add a premium touch to the appearance.
The instrument cluster consists of four analog gauges and 4.2-inch screen that provides navigation directions as well as vital information about what is going on under the hood.
The SS comes standard with Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system. Controlled by an eight-inch dash-mounted color touch, MyLink offers access to smartphone-based apps like Pandora radio and Stitcher radio. The system can connect up to 10 Bluetooth devices and store as many as 1,000 contacts.
Dashboard ***** and buttons mounted on the three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel gives users alternate options for controlling MyLink, and there is also a voice recognition system for hands-free calls, destination entering, song selection and more. Its "natural language" capability can recognize a staggering number of phrases - effectively eliminating the need for clunky and cumbersome memorized commands.
Standard equipment includes a Bose nine-speaker sound system, a color heads-up display and eight-way power adjustable seats up front.
Occupant safety
The SS comes standard with ten airbags, including knee, side-impact and head curtain airbags. StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear-vision camera with Rear Cross Traffic Alert all come standard.
The SS is also the first Chevy to feature Automatic Parking Assist, which can steer the car into either a parallel or reverse right-angle parking spot without any input from the driver.
Key competitors
There are many large, V8-powered rear-wheel drive sedans on the market but most of them are more expensive or more luxury-oriented than the SS. The sedan's main rival is the 470-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT8.
The Ford Taurus SHO packs a similar concept in a less powerful, all-wheel drive package. The Hyundai Genesis is more of a luxury cruiser, but it is powered by a potent 5.0-liter V8 that is rated at 429 horsepower and 376 lb-ft. of twist.

Hi `Keane, I agree with your statement. I like `it, but not for $45K + $1400.00 more for a SunRoof & a full spare (lol) + taxes, fees etc.

Heres my thing on this car, it doesn't seem GM is making it for the consumer, they're just making it so it can be used in nascar. I think its a decent car, looks are simple but not boring imo. Its got good power and is well equipped with an infotainment system, various other driver aids.

I think it would be a nice daily driver since its a 6 speed auto with paddle shifters, but the price is just too high. Maybe the upper 30's would be better and the name is quite dumb as well.

If they price it too cheap it would interfere with the Camaro and Cadillac sales.

It's unfortunately a car that just shouldn't exist with GMs current line-up across the board. If it's too cheap it will definitely take too much away from other cars that they might just make more profit off of.

Shouldnt have made it imo, and esp not in that design. For that money, I would just buy a stingray and call it a day. its not gonna get good gas milage for a road trip, and its surprisingly ugly.
