REPLACING FUEL PUMP

REPLACING FUEL PUMP
Is it hard to change a fuel pump on a 2000 Monte CarloSS ? Do I have to drop the tank or can I remove it from the access panel in the trunk ? Is there any special tool required that I should get ? Or should I take it and have it changed by a professional ?

RE: REPLACING FUEL PUMP
Through the access panel in the trunk, fairly easy job. There are no special tools required.Be careful when you pull the fuel sender assembly up out of the tank into the trunk because it will have some fuel in it.

Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution:Fuel Vapors can collect while servicing fuel system parts in enclosed areas such as a trunk. To reduce the risk of fire and increased exposure to vapors:
•
Use forced air ventilation such as a fan set outside of the trunk.
•
Plug or cap any fuel system openings in order to reduce fuel vapor formation.
•
Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.
•
Avoid sparks and any source of ignition.
•
Use signs to alert others in the work area that fuel system work is in process.
Notice:Clean all of the following areas before performing any disconnections in order to avoid possible contamination in the system:
•
The fuel pipe connections
•
The hose connections
•
The areas surrounding the connections
Important:For fuel sender assemblies accessible through the rear compartment, completely remove the rear compartment carpet before removing the fuel sender access panel.
Important:Always replace the fuel sender O-rings when installing the fuel sender assembly.
Important:The modular fuel sender assembly will spring-up when the snap ring is removed.
Important:Always maintain cleanliness when servicing the fuel system components.
[ol]
Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .
Remove the rear compartment trim panel. Refer to Compartment Trim Panel Replacement - Rear in Body Rear End.
Remove the seven nuts retaining the fuel sender access panel.
Remove the fuel sender access panel.
Disconnect the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor electrical connector.
Disconnect the fuel sender electrical connector.
Clean the fuel pipes and the fuel sender assembly to prevent fuel contamination during removal.
Disconnect the quick-connect fittings at the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar) .

RE: REPLACING FUEL PUMP
You can relieve the fuel system pressure by depressing the schrader valve on the fuel rail pressure access port on the fuel rail. This is best done on a cold engine because the residual fuel pressure will be very low.Be sure to hold a rag over the port to absorb the fuel that will escapewhen you depress the schrader valve. The access port will have a black plastic cap on it.Just unscrew the cap to remove it from the port. The fuel lines are disconnected as per this attached procedure from GM Service Information:
[ol]Grasp both sides of the quick-connect fitting. Twist quick-connect fitting ¼ turn in each direction in order to loosen any dirt within the fitting.
Use compressed air in order to blow any dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends.
Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male connector.
Pull the connection apart.
Wipe off the male pipe end using a clean shop towel.
Clean or replace any components as required. [/ol]
Installation Procedure
Caution:In order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, before connecting fuel pipe fittings, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe ends. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak.During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated.
[ol]
Apply a few drops of clean oil to the male pipe end.
Push both sides of the quick-connect fitting together in order to cause the retaining tabs to snap into place.
Pull on both sides of the quick connect fitting in order to make sure the connection is secure.
Tighten the fuel filler cap.
Connect negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
Inspect for fuel leaks.

Turn the ignition ON for 2seconds.

Turn the ignition OFF for 10seconds.
