Default Fuel gauge problem

The fuel gauge on my daughters MC SS is floating a lot. She says it is very unpredictable. Is it part of the fuel pump? Do you have to drop the tank to fix? Cost to fix?

Ok i am going off what my uncle who is a mechanic said, it was the sending unit, which is part of the fuel pump, he said it would be like $300 for it, you don't have to drop the tank there is a hatch in the trunk, somebody can probably find you a picture of what it looks like. I am actually having the same issues.

Default Fuel sensor level

I have the same problem but it's on an 03 I'm not exactly sure which gen has the hatch to get to the fuel pump. I do know that I have to drop my tank to get to mine. All in all it's just that your fuel sensor level is jacked up

Thanks all for the info. Wish I was there to help her, but it can wait as long as she watches her mileage.

Definately the issue, had to replace mine years ago, cost me $150 labour... Just be cautiuos with what the mechanic's estimates, yours like mine definately has the access panel... Some mechanics (crooks) will give you a song and dance about having to drop the tank thus charging considerably more and you're not there to verify... Knowledge is power and now you're in the drivers seat... There is definately a thread on here on replacing the sending unit so you can be familiar with the process... Good luck

If there is an access panel, I can do it when I go to VA to see her. I have dropped tanks to fix fuel pumps, I think I could handle the access panel type. Thanks for the info.
