Default A few questions about gas mileage...

i have a 72 monte carlo and i gotta say i can maybe get 120 miles out of a full tank that would cost me .. around $60 a week... is this just me or is that for most monte owners of that age class?

also does anyone know if 19mpg (city) and 25mpg(highway) is any good for a 8cyl yeared 89... anyone know how much gas that would be to fill it or how many miles i can get out of a full tank?

the second question is me asking because i might buy that car but if the gas mileage is around the same then whats the point right? hell i don't even know how big MY fuel tank is for my 72monte or how many city or highway miles it gets...if anyone can shd some light on this it would be greatly appreciated

What do you do, keep the happy pedal on the floorboard. Most full size cars back then had 18-20 gallon tanks, that means your getting about 5-6 mpg. I had a 72 Dodge Challenger w/340 and a 73 Ford Torino w/351C that got 17-18 mpg if I drove them sane.

well i put the best gas in it because its old and well i like to think the higher octaine helps it run better...i don't drive way to fast or all crazy like.. gas over in NJ where i live is around $2.50 or higher and thats where the high gas price comes in...any suggestions to help get more miles out of the car?..i know someone with a lebranc and he only gets around 120 miles on a full tank too...and speeding is not my problem, the gas leaving my tank way to fast is my problem

Is the engine "stock" or has it been "built"? Assuming it's a stock small block engine you should get at least twice the mileage you are getting. I would be looking at a complete tune up. Also someone could have put a larger than needed carb on (especially if it's a 4 bbl) you could have a 750cfm on there but only need a 500-600cfm. What size tires are you running? A taller than stock tire will result in less miles on the odometer making it your mpg look lower.

i was thinking it would be a tune up, the tires are stock tired and the engine is also stock. the carborator is the original so it guess it would just need a tune up if anything...thanks for clarifying on whats wrong..i'll get the tune up and see how it goes

I have a friend that bought a new Dodge Dakota w/318 several years ago. He always ran super and couldn't get over 14mpg. He switched to regular and his mileage went up to 17mpg.
I have run both in my 01 Monte and can't tell a difference in power or mileage.
You may want to run a lead additive I can't remember what year they went to hardened valve seats, but I think it was 73 or 74.
