To add visual to Bowtietech's write-up! I found this DIY (How to replace your fuel pump assembly on a 01 MC) video on youtube while looking up general MC repairs. I wished it was available for me in the past but it will get for those in the future who will encounter these problems.... Happy Repairs!!!

Great job finding that RGANT! That will help lots of folks as this appears to be a fairly common repair.

The contacts on the sending unit are typically plated with silver-palladium to resist corrosion. But over time, residual sulfur in gasoline can corrode the contacts causing the gauge to vacillate erratically or not at all. Replacing the sending unit is an expensive job because you have to drop the fuel tank unless you have trunk access, so a more affordable alternative is to simply add a bottle of additive to the tank.

I quote from an article I read concerning cheap gas: "Depending on who you talk to, it is suggested that starting around 2001 refiners have been reducing the use of detergent-dispersants by 40%-66%, that's up to a 2/3 reduction. This was made worse by additional reductions allowed and encouraged by the EPA in the wake of the 2005 hurricane season to alleviate spot shortages caused by the damage these storms did to our overall refining capacity. These reductions in the additive level and octane rating may save the refiners money and possibly increased supply, however it causes many engine problems, raises emissions, and lowers mileage for the users of their fuel."

As I posted earlier in this thread, three mechanics suggested that I needed to replace my sending unit. OF COURSE that would solve the problem. It would also solve the problem of a bad EGR if one replaced the entire engine.
We hear you Desertstar. Unfortunately, this a a mechanical problem with the sending unit as opposed to an electrical contact problem. The sending unit has small springs in it that lose tension over time and either have to be re-adjusted or the sending unit has to be replaced. The springs (some people are calling them "wipers") are very delicate so it appears to be an under-design issue with the sending unit springs since it is causing so many people to have this problem. You can actually tell by looking at the springs that they are not making complete contact anymore.

Wink fuel problem

I had the same thing happening to my 2003, I changed the fuel filter and put some injector cleaner in it. Then I went for a road trip. and it is running better. I increased my eco by 20%. The gauge is more accurate too.

that is operated by the fuel gauge itself. if the tank sensor is reading incorrectly then how could you go by range? you can't. the only way is to go by miles you drive. if you know you can go 300 miles on a tank fill it up between 250 to 300 miles. your idea will not work.

Hey guys my monte won't run right now it keeps cutting off. It's only getting 31psi of fuel pressure instead of the correct amount of 41psi. The dealer said its a bad fuel pump after changing fuel filter and running multiple test. They want 850 to change it. I know I can buy one for around 200. Does anyone know if there is an easy access panel on a 1998 Monte Carlo Z34 with the 3.8l I heard but I'm not sure. My car is at the dealership so I can check right now. I want to try replacing it on my own if I can.

Question 2001 monte carlo ss V6 3800 series II

hey guys ive been reading all the post, I bought a 2001 monte carlo ss V6 3800 series II and it wont start, I was sitting for 3 to 4 years, has 270,000 miles on it, it was running before it was parked because the transmission was out, I put a new battery in it, and pulled a plug to make sure it is getting fire and it is, I think it is the fuel pump because there is no noise when I turn the key on, and the plugs are not wet after an hour of cranking, I checked all fuses with a test light and switched the relays around thinking maybe one was bad, but im stumped, any suggedtions?????????????????
