Default thinking of trying to swap steering wheels

so i was thinking about getting a steering wheel off a 7th gen monte or impala and rewiring the controls and cruise to work.

but after viewing the diagrams on alldata i have determined the steering wheel controls will be easy and should require basically no rewiring(except splicing in the connections) since im using a pac programmable harness and could just reprogram it to learn the new resistance values of the new switches...easy.

the trouble comes from the cruise controls from what i can see the controls in the 6th gen are straight on/off momentary switches(great those are easy) but the 7th gen switches use a single wire with resistors to differentiate the buttons.

now if im correct on all that then i would have to somehow either convert the switches in the 7th gen steering wheel to plain momentary switches or find a module that i would program to produce momentary outputs(i havnt found anything yet that can do that)

Now can anyone look at these diagrams and see if it looks like im on the right track? or give me any advice on the easiest way to do this?

heres the diagram of the 7th gen cruise

My thought on how to do the cruise is to open up the switch and unsolder the resistors and solder in my own wires to wire into my cars wiring. but i dont know how feasable this is untill i have the steering wheel/switch to open up.

ok i went ahead and did a quick wiring on how i THINK i can do the cruise controls. not sure if this is the right way or not but its my idea.

Well let us know how it works for you. You're probably blazing a trail here. I, [probably] like most mod within the same generation - ie in my 05 Impala, I added a steering wheel and instrument cluster from a 2000-2005 Monte Carlo.

Best of luck with you're upgrades and changes and post some pictures.

I think I'll just go to a used parts place and try finding one and test if it's possible. Might only pull the cruise control switches first to see if I can rewire it and if so go back for the steering wheel

That's probably your best bet. Other than that, training/talking to an engineer would solve it - but it's cheaper, faster, and (possibly) more fun to test yourself and experiment.

The spline is the same though right? So it will bolt up?

Couldn't tell you that - I've never even sat in 2006+ Monte or Impalas. I know my 2004 Grand Prix has a larger nut than my 2005 Impala did.

well... so much for that idea. i went to the junkyard and found a 08 impala and pulled the wheel and went to another wrecked 03 monte and tried to put the impala wheel on and it doesnt fit. the shaft is bigger on the 03 monte...

so that puts this question to rest. no you can not swap the steering wheel from a 7th gen into a 6th.
