Question 2001 SS gas gauge malfunction

Something is amiss! I just bought my 2001 SS. I can live with a few things that are showing up as faulty or needing attention, but the gas gauge I would like to trust.
Mine reads either "full" or "empty" when in gear, but then when I am just idling in "Park", I get a correct reading and also likely a correct reading on "range" miles.
The dealer tells me that the sensor (sender) in the fuel pump assembly is faulty, but it seems to make no sense that the gauge should read correctly in "park" and then move slowly to "full" when in gear.
Any ideas about this? Surely someone else has had this problem.

Its the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump. I bought the sensor online for about $36 and installed it myself and mine has stopped acting crazy and now correctly reads the amount of gas.

Yea its an easy fix because our Montes have an access in the trunk. Have some old towels or rags ready for when you remove the fuel lines so you wont have gas everywhere. heres the thread be sure to follow the directions throughly!: https://montecarloforum.com/forum/ge...problem-11915/

Make sure to pull the fuel pump fuse and try to crank.your car for like 10 seconds to relieve the pressure or gas will shoot out all over you or in your face in my case lol.

Smile thanks for the help

I had to relay this information to my mechanic. as he had no idea that the part was replaceable as a separate unit. I hope he charges me as such and not as replacing the whole FP assembly. Many thanks all...for the replies and the great information.

It was indeed the fuel gauge sensor that was bad. $30 for that and about $75 to install it and all is working fine now.
My Monte is in extra fine shape now, but the way things are going I may need to sell it.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

One more thing! I had a distrust for computer codes, but it seems the codes were correct after all. I guess I can trust them now.

Where can I find the emblem that reads, Monte Carlo, the one on the driver's side toward the rear of my 2001? Mine is missing part of the "M"
