General Motors Heritage Collection:
An amazing collection few will ever see!

In a nondescript looking building on a side street somewhere north of the General Motors Technical Center, there is a facility that few people outside of GM know exists, but most car nuts would love to visit if they could. Therein lies the rub, most people can't get in. The GM Heritage Center is not open to the public. It's an archive for the company's historic documents, artifacts and cars.
After automakers unveil their concepts to the public at one of the big shows like Detroit, Geneva, Frankfurt or Los Angeles, the cars usually go on the road for the next year or two. They get shown at all the major and minor shows, and then they seemingly disappear. Sometimes the more memorable cars will pop up years later at concours and historic events, while others go into museums and the rest are just forgotten. Some end up being crushed while others end up stored in warehouses or go to private collections. A few years ago the Heritage Center was established as a place to collect GM's history. It's opened up to GM employees and their families several times a year and also used for special events and presentations. GM staff can also book the facility for off-site meetings. The night before the recent GM battery technology briefing, a group of bloggers were invited to visit the Heritage Center and look around.

Camaro may get direct-injection V8

The Chevy small block V8 has been around in one form or another longer than many current GM engineers have been alive, but continuous updates continue to keep the venerable powerplant relevant. GM is currently developing the world's first overhead valve Direct Injection engine, giving the 6.2L test engine big gains in horsepower and torque while bumping fuel economy from 3% to 6%.The 6.2L currently pumps out up to 403HP without DI in the Escallade, but Dave Sczomak, development engineer-GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering, says the technology will bump power to "well over 450HP."
Perhaps even more exciting is the possibility that the anxiously awaited Camaro may receive a variant of the engine. The mere thought of the ultra-sexy Camaro packing over 450HP without added boost could make us want to have a smoke. While we're hoping the Camaro gets the DI engine, the halo status of the Corvette makes the two-seater a shoo-in for the improved engine. That would give the base 'Vette nearly 500HP, and it boggles the mind to imagine the output of a Z06/SS/Blue Devil.
Editor's Note: There's no reason to believe GM wouldn't drop the DI V8 in both Corvette and Camaro. Back in December, a source we spoke to who was familiar with Camaro powertrain discussions told us that there was a faction pushing for seriously big power in the Camaro. When we asked exactly how big, the individual smiled and held up five fingers. We'll learn how that pans out in due course. Then in January at NAIAS, Ed Peper specifically told us that there were no concerns with having Camaro step on Corvette, power-wise, as the two cars have such different market positioning -- sports car vs. muscle car. Plus, the ZR1 ensures that there will be a Corvette with power that greatly exceeds that of Camaro anyway. No matter how things play out, there's good reason to expect some real excitement.

ROUSH Silverado sketch leaked![:-]I wonder if our MCF Member Bill -RevItUpFaster, will do thisto his Silverado ? Posted Sep 4th 2007 12:02AM by Alex Nunez

We have no information on this other than the image you see here, but pictures say a lot, and this one says that ROUSH is about to spread some of its performance pickup love over to General Motors in the form of the ROUSH Silverado. A poster at the CamaroZ28.com forum snuck a cameraphone shot of an official sketch and published it on the website. As you can see when you enlarge the photo, there's a pretty concise legal disclaimer at the bottom, and if we had to guess, someone is definitely going to get fired for this rather significant security breach. Either that, or ROUSH has deftly embraced viral marketing. Here's hoping for a blown 6.2L under that domed hood.
UPDATE: We have spoken to ROUSH, and they can only confirm that the Silverado depicted above is "a project that we are evaluating."
Thanks for the heads-up, Josh.

Tell me about it. Space got such a hard on for it in FL that the air shock wave it produced smacked me in the back of the head in WI.
