Default Seek/Search & you shall find >Good Luck<

Hi Conner,
I think you have a rare one.
You can find out more by checking several collector sites on the web.

Just go to google's & type in your Monte infor
& search the many sites.
Like the below one.
It should give you some idea of your value
and rarity.
1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. Chevy Monte Carlo SS. This is an original numbers matching 1970 Monte Carlo SS. The block, trans, and rear end all match. It has the usual items you would find on the 1970 Monte SS including Air Leveler System, Shock Protector Plates, Rear End Sway Bar, SS Badges, 454-360HP Engine, TH400 Trans, Front End Sway Bar, Boxed Control Arms, and Dual Exhaust. The Monte also has round gauge package with tach, bucket seats, center console with horseshoe shifter, AM/FM Radio with 8-Track (yes it works). Paint a strong 8.5 and some would consider it a 9 out of a 10. There are no rips, tears, holes, etc in the interior and it is original. Not original to the car is the carb a '80's Holley carb, the air cleaner, the radiator was just replaced in Oct. '14. The paint is not the original color. This came out of the factory as Misty Turquoise but changed to Torch Red prior to '93. Has been in the family since '93 and ALWAYS COVERED AND GARAGED KEPT. Mileage is original at 76,000+ Car runs and drives AWESOME!!! Call or email thru this ad.

PRICE REDUCED $ 29,900

Not sure what the 396 is is, only engines i'm finding for 70-72 are 350, 400, 402 and 454. The SS package was only on the 454.

somebody could have changed the engine or swapped the heads on it? my '68 Camaro rally sport came with a 327 ci. 210 HP moter originally ,I got her used in '81 my first spark plug change told me that the heads had been changed with 350 heads cause it used small "peanut plugs" as opposed to the larger diameter ones?? but I am not positive on that!!

No factory 396 option in a 71 Monte
1971[edit]

The 1971 model saw few styling changes. Inside, the SS model got new "European symbol *****", and a four-spoke steering wheel became optional. The 1971 Monte Carlo also saw the addition of a stand-up hood ornament. Mechanically it was largely unchanged, although the small-block Turbo-Fire 400 two-barrel engine was dropped. Other engines had compression ratios lowered to allow the use of regular leaded, low-lead, or unleaded gasoline, per a GM corporate edict. Engine ratings fell to 245 hp (183 kW) for the base Turbo-Fire 350 CID (5.7 L) two-barrel, 270 hp (201 kW) for the Turbo-Fire 350-4V, and 300 hp (224 kW) for the Turbo-Jet 400. The SS 454 engine was actually raised to a nominal 365 gross hp (272 kW) despite the reduction in compression ratio. This increase in horsepower was a result of the 454 engine using the more aggressive camshaft from the 390 hp 454 used in the 1970 Chevrolet Corvette and full-sized sedans.
Chevrolet listed both gross and SAE net horsepower figures in 1971 with the impending change to SAE net ratings in 1972. The ratings compared as follows:
EngineCarburetorGross hpNet hpTurbo-Fire 350 CID V82-bbl245 hp165 hpTurbo-Fire 350 CID V84-bbl270 hp175 hpTurbo-Jet 400 CID V84-bbl300 hp260 hpTurbo-Jet 454 CID V84-bbl365 hp285 hp
The SS 454 package would be discontinued after this year following production of only 1,919 units, but the 454 CID V8 engine would remain optional in Monte Carlos through 1975. The reason given for discontinuing the SS was that the Monte Carlo was marketed as a luxury vehicle instead of a muscle car. The SS nameplate would be resurrected 12 years later. Yet, at the same time that the Monte Carlo SS was judged a failure in the marketplace and discontinued, the Monte's reputation as a performance car on the race track was gaining strength because Ford and Chrysler were ending their factory-backed racing support due to declining muscle car sales and the need to divert dollars to meet costly Federal safety and emission regulations (General Motors' official policy had prohibited factory racing efforts since 1963). As factory support ended at Ford and Chrysler, the stock-car racing mantle switched to independent teams and sponsors, who overwhelmingly chose Chevrolets over Ford and Chrysler products due to Chevy's much greater availability and affordability of over-the-counter racing parts through the Chevy dealer network. The Monte Carlo was considered the best suited Chevrolet model for stock car racing by most NASCAR teams due to its 116 in (2,900 mm) wheelbase (only one inch above NASCAR's minimum requirements at that time, the Chevelle 2-doors had a shorter 112-inch wheelbase) and long-hood design which placed the engine further back in the chassis than most other vehicles for better weight traction. Thus the Monte Carlo became Chevy's standard-bearer for NASCAR from 1971 to 1989.
Production of the 1971 Monte Carlo was slow at the start due to a labor strike due to a 67-day corporate-wide walkout that coincided with the introduction of the 1971 models in September, 1970, leaving dealerships with only a small shipment of 1971 models (built before the strike) in stock until the strike was settled in mid-November, 1970 and then slow-going in reaching normal production levels until around January 1, 1971. Model-year production ended at 128,600 including the 1,919 SS models. AM/FM stereo radios with8-track tape players were optional.[5]

Not so sure about that.
In '71 Chevrolet had the C20 truck with a 396, but changed the emblems to "400". I guess "400" sounded better. They may have done the same with the Monte.

Wikipedia: Several changes occurred in 1971. First came another new grille design (the "egg crate") for Chevrolet trucks and black paint over portions of the GMC grille. Second, an additional trim package was introduced: the Cheyenne. On GMC models, this was referred to as the Sierra. These packages consisted mostly of comfort features — nicer interiors, more padding and insulation, carpet, chrome trim, and upper and lower side molding and tailgate trim. 1971 was the first year for AM/FM radios factory installed. Finally, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. While many prior C/K half-ton trucks had used a six-lug bolt pattern (6 x 5.5") for the wheels, two-wheel-drive models switched to a five-lug pattern (5 x 5–inch bolt circle) common to Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac passenger cars. The 1/2 ton 4 x 4 retained the 6 lug bolt pattern. This bolt pattern would remain the standard through the end of the C/K series (along with the Chevrolet/GMC vans). Also, Chevrolet changed the 396 V8 emblem designation to 400 V8.

Hi back BB Mike.
Bad news on your "Dream Car"
A co-worker bought his "Dream" 2015 Stingray and it's turned into a "Nightmare". He's had to take it to the dealer 3 times for them to pull the motor due to a oil pump issue. It's been covered by warranty each time, but I'm not sure if they've come up with a permanent fix yet.

Hi `Bob, that's so sad to read I've also heard of a few nightmare problems on the 2015 Corvette I hope Chevy finds the problem(s) & corrects. It still will remain a dream of mine + now the new Camaro & a 1st Gen Monte with a 350 crate & 4speed manual or a 4th Gen with the same.

The few 2016's I've seen have great quality control & look super. I won't be buying a new car or vette until I get a secure auto bedroom & equipped garage for it. Still working on my dream(s).

Thanks for your words/posts
