Is 72K miles too high to think about purchasing a Monte Carlo
Hey guys!
I'm new here, selling my camaro since it has become a money sink and was thinking about buying a Monte Carlo. I was looking at a 2003 SS that I can get for a fairly good price, only thing is it has 72K miles on it. The whole purpose of buying a different car is so that I can avoid dealing with all the problems I've dealt with on my first two used cars(ie problems galore, pouring money into them every few months to fix problems). I'm not sure if 72K is high for a Monte Carlo or not, how much life does this engine have left? Is there anyway to keep it going strong for a LONG time after I purchase it?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi `Jacob, & Welcome to the Monte Carlo Family Forum.
At 72K miles, the car is just broken `in : )
Is it a one owner ?
Do you know the maintenance history of the 03 SS ?
The 3.8L Engine is a proven bullet proof Engine,
if it is serviced and not abused.
I would do a CarFax Report on the 03SS you are looking at.
If you are not mechanically inclined, I would suggest
having a certified mechanic check it out.
Is it a AZ Monte ? It should be rust `free.
You can also go to MSNauto's.com
to check price/reliability report, etc.
72K is less then 14K miles a year, which is average.
What is the condition of the SS ?
Be Patience, and I'm sure many of our member's will
comment on the 6th Generation Monte Carlo.
We all think the Monte Carlo is a great car,
and `if you treat them like you love them, you will get
many happy miles on your highways of life.

72k is not a lot. As long as the previous owner got the annual oil changes and such, it should still have a lot of life left. I bought mine with 82k and I should have it for another 3 years until I am out of college. The only problem I ran into was a clogged cat, but other than that no issues whatsoever.

Mine had 108k on it when I bought it. That was really my only concern. Had my ex-step-father look at it since he's a mechanic. He's a Ford man and he even said the 3800's are bullet proof (his words too, Space 
) and the miles weren't that bad. Of course I don't drive everyday, I work from home, he said it would make a great car for me. It's also used on road trips when the boat/camper are not required. It should last me a long, long time, at least I sure hope it does.
I think they build them to last a lot longer than they used to. 100k used to be a lot but now days the way people drive, it doesn't take long at all the rack up the miles.
I'd still have it checked out though, won't hurt.

The car is from CarMax if that makes a big diff. I can get reports on the history of the car, too.

They are known for checking their vehicles out.
