If your engine is in good mechanical condition with no leaks 10 k miles is not impossible with above synthetic oils. The change can be extended by oil analysis. I tested my wife's 99 astro 4.3 v6 right at 10 k several times now I just let the change run the full year, the analysis always came back good for continued use. At 148 k she is running good as when we purchased 11 years ago with 12 k miles.

Thanks for the tip. But just in general, I should only need to put 4 qt.s in the engine right? I have the LS, didn't know if it would be a different quantity for the LS vs. SS

Can someone make a "How to" video on how to change the oil on a monte carlo. I am a novice at car repair.

I'm not a GM certified tech but I've been around a lot of cars and I've never heard of putting a half-quart of oil into the filter but I gotta admit, I can't say that it sounds like a bad idea. I'm takin my 04 Dale Jr. on a cross country trip so I'll be changin the oil before I leave and I'm gonna do that. Thanks for the new idea!

Good write up I've never actually read how to do it, glad to see i'm doing it right.LOL I always poke a hole in the old oil filter and let it drain before removing it. Then you dont have to worry about spilling oil everywhere.

I take my passenger front tire off on my 3800 engine to reach the oil filter MUCH easier.
