What are some common performance upgrades for a 2000 3.8?
I'm toying with the notion of buying a Monte Carlo. I always liked their look and it turns out they can be had fairly cheaply used. I'm 26 and I own an 83 Ford Thunderbird and a 78 F250. Love them both to death and I've put considerable money into performance upgrades for the Thunderbird. But since my career is going well and I have the option to spend more on a vehicle I'm kinda torn between getting a loan and finnishing up the Tbird or getting something shiny and new with all the advantages of modern technology. Like fuel injection . The 3.8 looks like a reasonably stout motor for a newer car but one of the things that gives me pause is the seeming lack of performance parts for this engine. It can't hold a candle to my 302 or my 460 in terms of performance potential. I thought I'd ask you guys what can be done to power up a Monte Carlo before I settle on anything.

If you are looking into a 2000-2005 Monte with the 3.8 there are tons of parts for that motor, and that motor is one bulletproof motor. Check out some of these websites, there might be some more but these are the only ones I can think of for now. If you get a 3.8 Supercharged they with little mods are a rocket.

there certainly isn't a shortage of aftermarket on a 3800. don't get hte LS and the 3400. I know the performacne says its only a 20 hp differenc,e but i've driven both nad the SS feels much faster than some 20 hp faster. plus, the 3800 has more aftermarket (where the 3400 has all but none) and the is a more durable, quicker engine.

This depends what your speed goals are.
U-bend delete, Cold Air Intake, colder plugs, and colder tstat will set you back about $250 and add some noticeable power.
You can change the exhaust for about $500 and get a larger throttle body for about$200.
Larger Cam for about $500
After that you can go turbo for about $2500 and beef up the transmission for another $3000 and you will havea 12 second car.
