I change my own oil. I use conventional oil, 5W-30, brands like Quaker State, Valveline and Castrol (nothing fancy). I do use Slick 50 every 50,000 miles. I prefer a BOSCH oil filter (but have used Fram and AC Delco filters). As long as the filter is not overly horizontal, I like to fill it at least half way with fresh oil.

I change between 3000-5000 miles. This has worked out great so far in my '94 Grand Am (3100 with about 214,000 on it, still dependable).

You are supposed to be able to get longer life out of synthetic oil. Plus I believe there is a performance gain (a gain I think only visible with a Dyno basically, very minor).

Outside of that, I am unsure of any gains. I know a con is higher cost, but the trade off is longer oil life.
