Take it to the dealer, or a reputable mechanic. I haven't had any experience with this.

Yeah gas cap is tight, and on

would this code affect the fuel gauge from working ?

first question

What year is your g/f's

Since you changed the sending unit in the tank check the lines and connectionsat the sender.
I dont think you said that the code was there before you changed the sender.

Here is some info I found
DTC P0449
Circuit Description
A battery positive is supplied to the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister vent solenoid valve. The control module
grounds the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve control circuit to close the valve by means of an internal switch
called a driver. The scan tool displays the commanded state of the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve as ON or
OFF. The control module monitors the status of the driver. If the control module detects an incorrect voltage for the
commanded state of the driver, this DTC sets.

I dont know where the canister is located at.
Maybe someone else can tell you.
On the canister is a sol. valve,
that valve most likely will need to be replaced.
It roughly costs around 20.00 bucks for it
If you go to autozone they have a free computer system that you can use. it will tell you where the cansiter is located

The evap' cannister is attached to a bracket near the fuel tank. The purge valve is attached to the rear cylinder head near the coils. The vent valve is mounted near the fuel tank, also.
Check your fuses for the purge and vent valve, probably in the engine fuse panel under the hood.
PROBABLY what you have is a loose connection on a hose near the cannister or vent valve. HOWEVER, I had to replace a vent valve, get this, because I topped off the gas tank usually, and when you do this, it runs into the vent valve and cannister, and ROTS IT OUT! I NEVER top off the gas tank any more!
ALSO, your evap system has a federally mandated warranty of 50,000mi or 5 years, or it used to, according to my ref' book.
