Hi guys and gals,

I'm new here, proud owner of a 95 Monte Carlo LS that i bought 2 days ago, cheap, with a broken engine. Previous owner claims it dropped a valve, which I still need to verify.
So my question is, intead of rather rebuilding (if still possible) the 3.1. Can i drop in a different size engine without mods? Maybe a 3.4? 3.8? What do you all think?
Or should I get a 3.1 again. If so, which others cars was the 3.1. used in, or the 3.8, so I can look for used engines.
I'm also interested in adding a set of aero wheels, would like some advice on fitment as well. It currently has the 225/60/16 stock rims. Aero comes only in 15 inch as far as I know, so what size, backspacing, etc could fit?

Who knows? Would like to get all the input I can get.

I can answer part of youre question. I have a 3800 in my 04 monte, son has one in his 98 buick and wifey had one in her 95 olds delta 88 so pretty much all gm cars used the 3800 up to around 2005

If I were you I would replace it with the same motor. It will be a lot less hassle then tryin to change everything over.

 

Since you have a '95, you're going to need to convert to OBDII if you get an engine '96 or newer. You will likely need the engine wiring harness if you do get a '96+ motor. A 3400 swap would be the same as a 3100 swap, you just have to remove the tranny from the old engine and install it on the 3400. Any other engine, you're going to have to swap axles, transmissions, PCM, wiring harness.

You can get a 3400 out of many Grand Ams, minivans, hell I think Equinoxes even have 3400s. But again, you will have to convert to OBDII if you get an engine '96+ (which I don't know much about, I just know it's necessary for a '95)

As far as the rims - Aeros will not fit without considerable modification I believe. Your bolt pattern is 5x115. There are many wheels that fit on these cars though... Browse some pictures up here or on cardomain or something. Most rims on '95+ Montes, Luminas, Regals, and Grand Prixs will fit your car.

 

Thanks for the responses. In the menatime i bought a reman. 3100 engine from GM, but it is a 98, therefore my questions in another topic. I also wrote to Bassett they are also making Nascar wheels and even DOT approved something that Aero does not offer. 15x7 should be the way to go waiting if they do the bolt pattern.

 

I got a 95 monte carlo with the 3.1 the body is falling apart so I went out and got a 97 monte carlo with a blown engine all im trying to do is swap engines will this work or am I gonna have some trouble

 

Pretty sure you are going to run into OBD issues. 95 is ODBI where as 97 is OBDII. I'm not sure what all you have to worry about that.

 

Just went through that. You can change it, no problem, as long as you only use the engine block, heads and intake. obd stuff is of no concern as long as you exchange only the mechanical side. meaning you have to reuse all the 97 sensors, etc.

Mostly yes. Not sure where the temperature sender is for the gauge on your 97. The 95 has it sitting on top of the cylinder head closest to the firewall, a 98 has no provision for that in the cylinder head but there are two plugs that have the same diameter where that sender can go in the block. If your 97 has a provision for the sender in the head, you're fine,everything else should be same.
