I'm new here and don't really know much about cars in general so this may seem like an obviously blunt question to alot of you guys.

But my cars automatic 3speed transmission wont go into its reverse and neutral but they both act like it is in its drive, so it looks like it just simply won't change gears. Checked the oil in the transmission and its even lower then low.

So now the question... What kind of oil do i put back in it? I have no idea what oil is or was in it and honestly dont even know if it is the original tranny since the previous owner had the engine replaced with a chevy van v8.

I'm lost

 

Be sure to get the proper Transmission FLuid for your Trans.
Check with previous owner to see what automatic transmission he put into your Monte...Is it the factory installed one, or was both the engine & transmission changed ? I would also invest in a 1st Generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo Service Book on your car..

Thanks kidspace! those vids sure helped... can't believe i never thought of searching youtube for this...

the oil really helped to smoothly change the gears.. but thats it... it still won't go in reverse or neutral, only drive and park are working.

Guess i now need to repair the gearbox or replace it... but atleast i know its not smart to try making a burnout with a 39 year old car :p

 

what color is the trans fluid for a 2001 monte carlo? mine is a light, very light tan?? shouldn't it be pink? trans runs great though. no issues
