View Full Version : Speed Limiter

Hello,

I've had my 2003 SS up to around 115-120, I noticed that it
pulls hard to 110 and then takes a short while to get in the 120
range. I know the chip mod will eliminate the speed limiter, but
I am just curious, how fast my SS go without the limiter?
Has anyone installed a chip and if so what was the top speed driven?...

I have a supercharged ss and it doesn't have a speed limiter that i know of and I have had my car up to 135 and it seemed like it had a little more power left. I hope this helped out as much as possible.

Joe,
Thanks for your reply. That figures, GM socked it to the little guy again...lol I knew I should have footed the extra 5K on the supercharged model... What made you back off at 135? I wonder what top out is. I will do a little research on that one and post back.

i'd back out at 135 myself. but i've never gotten my monte passed 100 yet. do you know if the 96 monte Ls has a speed limiter? if so, how do i remove it?

Earth,

I am with you.... I have been up to 130 before (Not in my 03 MC) and that was enough for me. If I had a wide open road way I might have been more open to going faster, but other drivers scare me not to mention that nasty ticket if you get caught...lol

oh yea, i don't need a hefty fine coming my way. good thing they have drag strips for those kind of things.

Earth,

I missed your question on the speed limiter for your vehicle. If you have one it is programmed into your puter chip. You may be able to get an aftermarket chip or a programmer.

everyone is always saying just get a chip programmer but is it really that great i mean i would like to go over 120 but does it help with the normal speeds i mean i very rarely get goin that fast so is it worth it just to go 120+

montejass

Yes, it is worth it.........

There is nothing worse than pulling away from someone only to hit a road block when you hit the speed limiter as you watch the slower car pass you. [sm=headbang.gif]

well todd i see you been busy while i been away. 135 damn you guys are better than me. i wont even go that damn fast on my bike let alone in a car especially with the way people drive her in atlanta and plus i am with you guys on the tickets issue.

It's very rare that I get a chance to open my Monte up as well.

But I have to admit, I am guilty on occasion. I've acctually been kinda wiggy on testing out my re-write of my chip to see how fast it will go because of the tires, they are a little worn and I am not chancing a blow out @ WOT. I set it for 165 but something tells me I won't get even close to that number.

I'll let you know when I get my ZR's. (At the track of course;))

Hey Todd, this thread answers my question to you a few weeks ago about limiters. Maybe I'll get ba--s and try it one day

I forgot to add that my programmer has made other changes to the overall drivability of the car.

A. I was able to adjust pressure in the trans to firm up ****s and adjust shift points.

B. I was able to adjust the rev limiter.

C. The set program to adjust air/fuel mixture has improved my gas mileage by 2miles per gallon.

Not to sound like a spokes person for Hypertech here but it has made quite a few changes on my Monty for the better..

well todd i see you been busy while i been away.

BTW, where did you run off to Ben? We were about to send out a SAR team out for you..

hey just to let you know I have a 03 Monte SS and yes it will do every bit of the speedo and a bit past it. But i also have that advantage of being in Germany and have the Auto bond where i can play in areas of no restrictions. But i will let you know that after you hit 130 the car gets loose and felt real weird. i have not changed anything n the car other then eh tires i have are Zr rated and i have the reprogrammer of course. I have not changed shift point due to not knowing really how to do it. One thing i would really like to find out if i can do it is the fan after the key is off feature It would be nice to have that to help cool the car down after a long drive.
but in a nut shell yes the car can and will do the spedo. and they are not as slow as people tend to think lol
but then in the states every one thinks of the BMW as a nice car here you could buy them all day Long for 2000.00 due to them being the chevett of the country LOL

yeah i have a 04 ls mc the same color as yours and here in atlanta i have done around the 130 mark myself adn felt teh same thing thought that it was just soemthing that my car was doing.

hey. i have an '04 Intimidator SS as well and got it just off lease, soi KNOW the pcm is stock, and mine will hold 125 and that is it's top. i am glad it isn't the same as in my '02 SS where, at 112, the car would cut and drop to 105... the up and down got old!

and i love going that fast, but i'm always a little leery that a rabbit, raccoon, skunk, dog, gopher, pheasant, deer or some other friendly woodland creature is going to decide that it is faster and try to test its theory in front of me... those speeds? GAME OVER!

Not only the animals jumping in front of you, but what if a hidden driveway showed up with a car pulling out? I LOVE going fast, but I keep it at the track. I'm a fire fighter and I've seen plenty of high speed collisions/fatalities. Besides, to the person who started the thread...do you still have stock Eagle RS-A's on your car or do you have better tires? (I'm not a fan of the eagle's, maybe some of you have had better experiences) Be safe everyone!

Wow, nice recovery of a 2004 thread.

I did start this thread and just install my third set of RSA's not too long ago.

The RSA is a great tire for dry roads. I take it a bit easier on wet pavement but find the RSA's to grip pretty damn good otherwise.

that's true! luckily, after sunset, you can see vehicles coming from driveways MILES before they do (my home county has some of the best straight-aways around!) i've only done it once w/ my Intimidator, though, and don't intend to do it again any time soon (gas - $3.25+/- andtires $300) I would run my '02 up in the 110 area whenever it got nice out, though... maybe (to pull in another thread) that wood block on the pedal is in order... [:-]

also, have had NO problems with my RSA-W's... but, like IAHKAT, i do take it easy on wet roads (still nervous after Christmas) and leave my trunk empty!

and that's true on the recovery! i just noticed it in the "Recent posts" box and commented... never looked at the post dates!

That's good. See here in SW MI, some of it is flat and some of it is hilly w/blind driveways. I'm more concerned with the blind drivers...:DI'd like to run to MIS sometime and take my car up to 110-115 sometime to see how she handles. Although it'll have to wait until I get the right speed-rated tires. Be safe!!

I still got the RSA's on mine too. (the car sat on the dealer's lot unsold until I bought it this past august). I hate the RSA's. My grand am GT came with RSA's too, and they were total crap on that car also.

I'll agree they're great on dry pavement. But that's it. The slightest bit of dampness on the ground, and you might as well be driving on ice. I'm ditching the RSA's very soon. Looking at maybe getting either Michelin HXMXM4's or Michelin Primacy MXV4's.

I'm done with RSA's.

Thanks you too...

I see that my old ID is still active but have no desire to fullfill the role of moderator. A moderators role requires a great deal of dedication of time to ensure everything stays on track and to be there when things get out of hand as you well know. I don't have the time now that I did back when I was active to be an effective mod.

Thanks for the offer but I think I will keep my role as a guest and semi-active participant (when I can remember the web address as mentioned above). lol

Wait a minute, how did we go from BBQ to Pizza? I guess I could always find you a BBQ Pizza. It sounds nasty but I would bet that someone has one or would make it.

I may be headed to Kerrville (three sisters) next month, I'll let you know if that materializes and we will stop by your casa. You don't mind 10 or so bikes showing up at your house do ya? lol
