i've got a brother-in-law that has an 03 (i believe) monte carlo ss. it's a nice car by all means, but he is determined that just because it has "SS" stamped on the side that it's a race car. he claims it's supercharged, but it's not, i've seen the engine bay. it's a stock 3.8. not a bad motor, my mom has a bonneville with the same motor in it, and it runs pretty good. but not good enough to keep up with the LSx motors by a long shot. also claims he can keep up with a corvette [sm=icon_beat.gif]. and he thinks he can outrun my trailblazer ss. [sm=icon_beat.gif] anyways, he's so confident he can outrun my SS we've got a friendly little wager on it ($100), i'm just waiting on him to get ready. i wish he had the new 06+ SS with the 5.3 in it, that would be a good race.
on a side note, mother-in-law is looking at new cars. i'm pushing her toward the new monte ss, grand prix GXP, or bonne GXP :D

my friend has a silverado with a 5.3 and i know the supercharged 3.8 will take it, but the regular 3.8 i dont think so, maybe, it'll be close, very close
we have a guy up here in woodstock that is the same way, he thinks that since his car says ss on it it means supercharged, he's also stickered it like the jr car, but waaaay more stickers(too many in my opinion (its silver) and he keeps saying its the jr edition and that its supercharged, but he doesn't have a boost guage in his car, so i dont think its supercharged and he wont let anybody see the engine because "its dirty" boo hoo** he even recently put a supercharged logo on it, that wasn't on it before

that awd is gonna slow you down though, would have been perfect if it was just rear wheel drive
you got any pics of your ride, i love those new ss trailblazers, i just saw one a couple days ago, they're mint with the ss rims on it and everything

got some pics, not the best in the world. i've never claimed to be a good photographer
whoops, how'd that last one get in there? [sm=gears.gif]

I just read this whole thread for the first time. LOL!! Your friend is funny!!
I read Truckin' magazine (cuz I am a truck/suv man at heart...used to have a silverado). When the Trailblazer SS first came out, they were in the middle of their SUV of the year contest. Trailblazer didn't win, but they named it their "Most Fun to Drive" winner. They only complained that they would like to have seen more aggressive styling for the SS model, but at the same time, stated that is looks like a "No Nonsense" mean-machine when you consider what's lurking under the hood.

yeah, i have that same article. when i read that i thought "damn, a LS2 in a trailblazer...should be mean" and i had to have one. it's nice and pretty quick for what it is. i've whooped up on several 99-04 stang GTs...even toyed with some new body style ones, but didnt get to run them from a dig. it's a great sleeper cause when i first got it hardly anyone knew what it was, all they saw was a TB on 20s. i've got a pretty good kill list to prove that the masses was ignorant lol. but now since i've had it a little while and there's a couple more running around town people are starting to know what it is pretty easily. there's a total of 3 in my town, my blue one, a black 2wd, and a silver 2wd and i'm actually friends with both of them.
anyways, enough of me rambling on about my hooptie. my "friend" is actually my brother-in-law, and he's......different. a good guy all around, but he loves his car more than i do my TB, which nothing wrong with that. but i realize that i do, infact, drive a SUV. it's not a race car and i know this, so i know where to draw the line on it's capabilities. he's got the 03 n/a SS and he honestly believes it's supercharged and can outrun the majority of things on the street. (i mean it DID keep up with a vette [sm=icon_rofl.gif] )

actually take off is worse as they spin. mine just squats and takes off. now from a roll they should take me, but i haven't really raced them from a roll, and they wouldn't take me by much. when i'm racing someone on the street i prefer a dig...the awd and 1st gear is my major advantage. take me to 2nd gear and i lose my major advantage. and i can have loads more fun on slippery roads than they can.....to an extent. i can't do donuts, or smokey burnouts or the like, but i fear no one on a wet road race lol

I took my friend who has a suburban with the 5.3L V8 and totally owned him. The suburban might be a tad heavier than a silverado but not by much. If I can own him with a 3400 then you can def take him with a 3800.
i dont think either one will take the silverado. typical 2wd weighs in at around 4400 lbs and the suburban closer to 5700lbs. the 3.8 will stand a better chance than the 3.4 though. my sis-in-law has an alero with the 3.4 and i wasn't too impressed with it. i've been around 3.8s and they're alot more peppy, but still dont know if it'll stand up to a 5.3 in a short wheel base 2wd. i dont know what kind of truck it was since it wasn't clearly stated. and not to mention for some reason the suburbans usually have less hp than the trucks.
but go ahead and race it, not gonna hurt anything. another thing to consider is that most of the 5.3s have a programmer and exhaust...some have a CAI too. or at least around here it seems like every 5.3 you run across has the same things done to it. a few of them have a cam shoved in them, but few and far between.

well i know the 3.8 will beat the 5.3 silverado because i used to own a dodge magnum 3.5L and that lost by half a car to the silverado. my friend has a 3.8 and used to beat me by 2-3 car lengths. idk about the 3.4L but the 3.8 is a for sure win.

I have a 2005 5.3 Silverado Z71 Extented cab and a 2004 Monte Supercharged SS - (and I know its supercharged). My Monte would blow the doors off my truck without even breaking a sweat.
I had a 2001 Monte SS which had the Standard 200hp 3.8 v6, which was pretty quick, but the pull the 04 SS has up to about 80 mph is a whole other dimension over the non-supercharged 3.8.
I have a new 07 SS on order, and not having driven one with the 5.3 v8, I am a little apprehensive about the power. It's got to be way over the 04 SS I have now, and although the saying goes "You can never have enough power" it may take some getting used to.
I have been more than happy with my little Supercharged job. I guess i'll see soon enough.

a 3.8 stock ss will put up a hella good fight but will not win. as far as the SCMCSS's... well i am alittle disapointed with mine. generaly its a low 15 second car i got it in the 14's once. but i'm a aweful FWD launcher! however, if the 3.8 NA is built up right watch out.

OK, let me silence all this debate on 3400's and 3800's vs. Silverados. I actually raced one from light to light to light. 5.3L reg. cag, short bed. I beat him each time, but not by much. Maybe 3/4 car length. He was right on my tail the whole time. I drive an '05 LT; NA 3.8L. I think that in a rolling race on the freeway, his greater HP would pull on me, but wind resistance would be his downfall. I don't believe a 3400 could keep up with it. Maybe it could pull on a Suburban, not the truck. Suburbans are also geared differently than the trucks. My Silverado had 3.73 gears and an LT1 with lots of goodies on it. 5.0 Mustangs couldn't keep up with it. But, that was then...

i can believe that, 3/4 of a car is a driver's race. and was that stock vs. stock?
and i was going from my experience in my trailblazer. i beat a monte ss n/a pretty bad and it seems like the 5.3 trucks keep up better...they still get beat pretty badly, but it seems like they keep up better than that monte did

lol, i'm so doped up on flu medicine it's not funny too, so that didnt help any.
i find it believeable that the 3.8 outran it by 3/4 of a car. 3/4 of a car is a drivers race and depending on several variables it's fully possible the 3.8 did outrun the truck.
but i'm still standing my ground that if all things were fairly even the truck would take the car. but that would include not much gas, not a bed full of stuff, not carrying any other passengers, etc in the truck. and the fact that they were both either stock...or modded to be about the same fits into that story too.
im not saying it's impossible for a 3.8 to outrun a 5.3 in a truck. i'm saying stock vs. stock (to keep things simple) i think the 5.3 would take the win.
if none of this makes sense i'll stop while i'm ahead and try again when i'm not floating through the air lol

Yup. Stock to stock (except for my K&N air filter). We each had one passenger, and he had nothing in the bed. The only other variable is gas. I only had 1/4 tank at the time. If he was full, that's a lot more gas hence more weight. Those trucks have a 26 gallon tank, I believe. Also, he was 2WD.

well there's several other variables...like gears. those trucks came with several different gear ratio's available.
i'm not doubting that you did, in fact, outrun the 5.3. not a doubt in my head, as i know what both cars are capable of. i'm just saying i wouldn't pull up to every stoplight with the cocky attitude that just cause you outran 1 you can outrun them all. and that's not even from a modding stand point. some engine's are dogs from the factory and other's are freaks. like i said about gears too, a 3.73 posi is going to take off better than a 3.42 open diff.

No, I hear ya. As I said, my Silverado had a 3.73 rear end, it was a monster. I don't plan on racing everyone. All I was really doing was testing and comparing. Sorry if I came off as cawcky (for the censors) in the posts. I can see how that can be perceived.
I was actually surprised because I had taken a same setup but GMC truck when I was selling cars and was impressed at how it performed and made smokey donuts in the parking lot. Shhh...don't tell anyone.
